Our Giesen Story

Some think the Giesen Wines story starts when two brothers with itchy feet and a penchant for travel set off from Germany and found themselves in New Zealand in 1979, buying land and planting a vineyard in 1981.

"We read the reviews and knew we had to stop here. We were met by Jo who was so knowledgeable about all of the wines and had us tasting a wide variety, we stayed for lunch highly recommend the Vintage Platter perfect for two people. "

"A large group of us cycled to Giesens for lunch and we were not disappointed. Their vintage platters were amazing including the wine. The cellar door is situated in beautiful surroundings and as this was NZ winter - a large roaring fire in the main restaurant kept us warm. A must if you are in Blenhiem."

"Arriving unannounced on a Sunday afternoon, we were surprised to find only one table taken. Choosing to sit outside (with our dog) we viewed a steady stream of arrivals. Nonetheless, our delicious lunch appeared promptly. The platter, ample for two, included two glasses of wine and we had been invited to a tasting to decide which wine to choose. My partner supplemented his lunch with a plate of freshly steamed mussels and if one could find something to be picky about, it would be that the broth was rather salty. Cheerful service and a very pleasant knowledgable host for the tasting."

"I’ve had the Sauvignon Blanc in Australia and its one of my favourites. They also make a great sparkling and a wooded Sauvignon which were superb. The host couldn’t have been more helpful and didn’t do the hard sell."

"Loved the ambiance of the restaurant with great service and beautiful cuisine. On top of this add one of our most favourite wineries. Outstanding. The view from the dining area is amazing - looking over the vineyards to the mountains."

"Popped in for a quick late lunch. We chose a platter that came with 2 glasses of wine and only cost $40. We thought it was great value and had an excellent selection of cheese, seafood and breads. Really enjoyed the food and wine. Great friendly service. Would definitely return."

"We went in for a tasting and were amazed to find that they offer up to 6 tastings of different wines for free! We let the girl behind the bar choose our wines for us: she was informative and the wines were delicious. Once we had finished the official number of free tastings she even allowed us to try a Shiraz we were interested in. Once we had finished with the wine we ordered one of their lemon cakes, which was fantastic. The interior is comfortable and rustic, and we greatly enjoyed our time there."

"We were recommended Giesen by family and friends. Much better than I expected. Informative wine tasting session and we decided to stay for lunch. Plus took away a couple excellent bottles of wine. To be sure a worthwhile visit if your doing the vineyards."

"We stopped here for lunch on our wine tour. We tasted 6 lovely wines from the extensive Three Brothers wine list and enjoyed a glass of delicious Riesling with our lunch. The platter was fantastic with seafood, meats, cheeses and unusual homemade chutneys and sauces. We sat in the courtyard and soaked up the sun and scenery. The staff were all so friendly and knowledgeable, we learned a lot. Would definitely recommend for tasting and lunch!"

"We were told that Giesen was one of Marlborough's best. We fully agree. The wine was great (will be ordering), the service was excellent (Myriam was wonderful), and the landscaping/decor was extremely artful. This groundskeeper is the best! Don't miss Giesen."

"Just enjoyed a platter, desert and coffee. Fresh and ample selection on the platter. Decadent deserts and great coffee. Service the best I have experienced in a long time. Very friendly staff - can't wait to go back."
