Giesen Mosel Riesling

A brand new German Riesling from Giesen

We’re kicking off 2020 by celebrating a new addition to our award-winning Riesling family! As you may have spotted in our recent news post about Riesling, we have a special new wine from the Giesen brothers’ vineyard in Germany.

Theo, Alex and Marcel Giesen have fond memories of their grandfather, August, travelling to Mosel to buy barrels of the region’s world famous Riesling. So much so, they were prompted to purchase a vineyard and make their own wine in this iconic German region.

We’re excited that their first vintage is now available to buy!

Bringing the best of Germany to New Zealand

Giesen Mosel Reiler Goldlay 2018 is unashamedly Germanic. With its fruit grown on the slopes of the Mosel’s most regarded winery area, it’s a showcase of the region’s ancient slate soil and cool climate of its origin, showcasing high minerality, giving way to flavours of lime, lemon, melon and pineapple. It’s perfect balance between minerality and tropical flavours is thanks to its dryness.

This very approachable wine is perfect for every occasion – a great aperitif on its own or equally enjoyable matched with a meal. Seafood is a sure bet with Mosel – the purity of flavour in crustaceans like crab, prawn and crayfish are echoed in the wine and given a flavour twist with Mosel’s elegant acidity. Germans are well known for their love of pork, and Giesen Mosel and pork are a perfect match – try it with slow roasted pork belly or even a BLT.

Age, or enjoy immediately

The Mosel Riesling is a delicious reflection of its German terroir; it also reflects its connection with New Zealand and the brothers’ love of sharing wines with family and friends. Not only is this a great quality wine but it’s incredible value – particularly given that it comes from Reiler Goldlay, one of Mosel’s most acclaimed Riesling growing areas. Giesen’s Mosel Riesling is drinking beautifully now, and its firm acidity means it will age well for up to five years.
