A beautifully balanced chardonnay showcasing dried apricot, delicate florals, and subtle almond meal. Layers of complex flint and a light dusting of phenolics add intrigue, while fresh acidity provides vibrancy and elegance to this exceptional vintage. 

With over four decades of winemaking experience, the three Giesen brothers are intimately acquainted with Marlborough’s best vineyards and terroir. World renowned vineyard ‘Clayvin’ has historically set the standard for premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production from Marlborough. These wines deliver exceptional, pure expressions of the Clayvin Vineyard which we’re proud to share with you. 

Certified organic, this north-facing hillside vineyard is nurtured with meticulous hands-on viticulture following biodynamic principles. The clay soils, varied root stocks and high density planted 30+ year old vines reduce vigour and promote root structure, delivering highly concentrated fruit with great structure, tannin and minerality.

Winemaking

Fruit was selectively hand-picked to ensure picking at optimal ripeness. It arrived at the winery in optimum condition, was whole-bunch pressed with the free-run juice settled and transferred to oak. A wild yeast starter created a warm natural fermentation. Fermentation occurred in 1000 litre German oak ‘Fuder’ barrels; the wine rested on lees for 11 months prior to racking and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation.

"2014 Vintage: One of Giesen's single vineyard series, this is from Brancott Valley's silty loam Clayvin vineyard, and from organically farmed vines more than twenty years of age. Whole bunch pressed, wild ferment, after settling this was sent to new 1000L German oak fuder (cigar) for 11 months to impart a lower oak to volume ratio. An impressively finessed, concentrated, earthy, flinty, structured form, with tight lemon eraser, stone, and earthy meadow herb-lined lees. A mineral hum vibrates along the finish. Love the energy in this young wine, one that will age very well over the next 5-10 years easy."
