Giesen Uncharted

Chardonnay

Discover our new range that showcases Marlborough's finest.

This generous Chardonnay is already a favourite among our team! We use only selected parcels of hand-picked fruit from the Wairau and Southern Valleys, and we pick early to ensure the beautiful natural tartness Marlborough is known for. Sites are chosen for their heavier soils which gives this wine a wonderful minerality.

On The Nose

Look for notes of white peach, lemon, toasted hazelnut, and flint.

On The Palate

Enjoy the rich, concentrated palate, with bright zest balancing the fruit sweetness. Ripe lemon and peach flavours, with grapefruit on the finish.

Vineyard

Wairau & Southern Valleys, Marlborough

Winemaking

We pay particular attention to detail in our Uncharted wines, hand-harvesting only small premium parcels of fruit from selected Wairau and Southern Valleys vineyards with heavier soils. This adds texture and subtle flint notes, and ensures an intense and distinctive flavour profile that characterises these subregions.

Our winemaking team lovingly shape this wine with careful hands-on techniques. The wine is barrel fermented at a warmer temperature in 300L French oak hogsheads which builds a really beautiful texture.

A portion of the wine is then allowed to go through malolactic fermentation to add richness and roundness, complementing the fresh, bright acidity of the remaining portion. A selection of French and German oak barrels including 12% new barrels are picked for maturation, allowing us to bring out a subtle oak character while letting the fruit shine through.

Melbourne International Wine Competition 2021

"Erupting with roast apricot, pineapple and cinnamon toast characters on the nose and sending the palate into an apple-edged peach party, the monster 2020 vintage has seriously delivered something delicious. Fat, juice and jumping with energy and tension, it's a rich, ripe, face-wallop of a chardonnay that really showcases how Marlborough produces powerhouse styles.
2020 Vintage, Reviewed October 2021.

Yvonne Lorkin, Canvas Magazine feature

"Classic, enticing and familiar bouquet of Chardonnay with aromas of sweet peaches and just whipped cream, vanilla and baking spice moments with a mild toasty oak appeal. On the palate - dry, nicely weighted with a creamy and spice mouthfeel, a core of fruit and contrasting acidity and warming alcohol. The finish is lengthy with fruit, spice and wood flavours that mirror the nose. Great drinking from today and through 2025.

"Instantly appealing, this hand picked wine was grown in the Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys and fermented in French and German oak barrels of varying sizes. An elegant, lively wine with a creamy bouquet, it is mouthfilling, with strong citrusy, gently biscuity flavours that are fresh, crisp and sustained.

Bob Campbell, The Real Review

"Instantly appealing, this wine was hand-picked in the Wairau Valley and Southern Valleys, and fermented in a combination of French oak hogsheads and puncheons, and large (1000 litres) German oak barrels. An elegant, lively wine with a slightly creamy bouquet, it is mouthfilling, with strong, citrusy, gently biscuity flavours and a fresh, crisp, sustained finish. Best drinking mid-2021+.
2020 Vintage, Reviewed December 2020."

Winestate New Zealand

"Bright, pale yellow with some depth, even colour throughout. The nose is soft and poise, aromas of citrus, pineapple entwined with barrel-fermented notes of flint and creamy lees nuances. Medium-full bodied, the palate is well-packed with pineapple, Meyer lemons and peaches; enriched by well-proportioned oak spices and flint. The palate is creamy with a lightness supported by lacy acidity and a fine spicy, phenolic textured-line, linger to a harmonious, sustained finish. Match with monkfish stew and chicken & corn over the next 3-5 years. Handpicked fruit from Southern and Wairau Valley, fermented and aged in French oak hogshead, puncheons and 1,000L German Fuder for 10 months, 10% new oak, 18% one-year-old oak with the balance older. 13.5% alc, 1.2g/l RS.
2020 Vintage, Reviewed November 2020."
