Sustainability

Sustainability

How we show up

We take sustainability seriously because we plan to be here for the long haul. Our approach is practical and measurable. We focus on the places we can make the biggest difference: in the vineyard, in the winery, and through the choices we make every day.

What we’re doing now

Certification and programmes

  • Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ): Active participant in the SWNZ programme.

Vineyards and growing

  • Organic winegrowing: Clayvin Vineyard is managed organically.

Waste and circularity

  • Waste minimisation: Ongoing, measured waste minimisation across our operations.

  • Grape marc repurposed: Grape marc is sent for livestock feed and green spread back into vineyards.

  • Soft plastics recycling: Soft plastics are recycled through FuturePost.

  • HDPE recycling: HDPE packaging is recycled through AgRecovery.

  • PPE and clothing recycling: Old PPE and clothing are diverted from landfill through recycling pathways where available.

Packaging

  • Ultra lightweight bottles: We use ultra lightweight bottles to reduce packaging weight.

Energy and efficiency

  • Ethanol recovery: Ethanol recovered during dealcoholisation is used to fuel the boiler for our spinning cone column.

  • Bioethanol contribution: Where surplus ethanol is sold for blending into petrol, it reduces the overall fossil component of fuel without additional land use.

  • Electricity supply: Our electricity supply is more than 95% renewable.

Water and vintage efficiency

  • Water use reduced: Our dejuicing decanters have halved water usage during vintage.

  • Electricity use reduced: More efficient winemaking processes have reduced electricity usage at the winery.

 Transport and fuel

  • Reducing diesel use: We have reduced diesel usage by simplifying our fleet and equipment needs, including selling vehicles and farming implements and not replacing them.

Where we’re focused

The work is never “done”. Our focus is on continuing to reduce waste, energy and water use, and making smart upgrades that deliver real-world improvements across the business.

Progress that’s measurable

We prioritise initiatives we can track and improve over time. Where we can, we measure impact, review performance, and keep lifting the standard year on year.

Better choices, backed by action

This is sustainability in practice. Thoughtful decisions, made consistently, and backed by action that holds up to scrutiny.
