Our People

Redefining winemaking, one moment at a time.

Giesen is a Marlborough, Aotearoa New Zealand winery made for real life. Big celebrations. Quiet Tuesdays. Everything in between.

Our story starts with three brothers, Theo, Alex and Marcel, who took a leap from Germany to New Zealand in 1979. They planted their first vineyard in Canterbury in 1981, and a few years later built their winery in Marlborough around one simple idea: to make generous wine for generous people. That mindset still guides us. We are family-owned, New Zealand made, and grounded in the place that shaped us.

Today, that same craft lives on through our winemaking team. We bring together traditional winemaking expertise and a specialised non-alcoholic team, led by Chief Winemaker Jeremy Tod. It is deep experience, sharp detail, and plenty of practical curiosity. The kind that sweats the small stuff, because it shows up in the glass.

Our vision is clear: to be the world leader in redefining winemaking. For us, that means real wine for real life, from 0% to full strength. When we saw people asking for more flavour with less alcohol, we invested in world-class dealcoholisation technology (the first in New Zealand) and launched Giesen 0% so more moments could include wine.

If you’re here for the classics, the lighter options, or none at all, welcome. Pour yourself a glass of our story.

Meet our winemakers

 Jeremy Tod

CHIEF WINEMAKER

Originally from Hunterville in New Zealand’s central North Island, Jeremy Tod’s passion for wine began early, spending weekends and school holidays working in a Central Hawke’s Bay vineyard. His career has taken him across Australia, the USA, Mexico, and Chile, where he spent eight years honing his craft.

After returning to New Zealand in 2015, Jeremy and his wife settled in Marlborough, drawn to the lifestyle and proximity to the coast. Before joining Giesen in 2020, he spent several years at Yealands, where he held the role of Senior Winemaker. As Chief Winemaker, Jeremy thrives on the pace and diversity of the role, balancing innovation with quality and a strong team culture.

Outside of work, Jeremy enjoys time with his wife and three children, firing up the barbeque, and getting in the surf whenever he can. His go-to pairing is Uncharted Sauvignon Blanc with a citrus-rich South American ceviche.

Andrew Hawker

SENIOR WINEMAKER

Andrew Hawker’s winemaking journey began in his parents’ vineyard in Central Otago, where a love of science, creativity, and the energy of harvest took hold early. He completed a Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University in 2013 and went on to gain international experience in Austria with a biodynamic producer focused on Riesling and Grüner Veltliner.

Since joining Giesen in 2015, Andrew has played a key role in crafting core varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. He works closely across the winery, collaborating with cellar, production, compliance, sales, and marketing teams, and is known for his precision, versatility, and openness to new technology.

Outside the winery, Andrew enjoys life with his wife and two children, coaching football, exploring the outdoors, and experimenting in the kitchen. If he weren’t a winemaker, he’d likely be a chef.

Reinier van Greunen

TECHNICAL WINEMAKER

Reinier van Greunen didn’t set out to become a winemaker, but his studies at Elsenburg Agricultural College in South Africa sparked a passion that’s now spanned nearly two decades. He refined his skills at South Africa’s largest winery, gained international experience in France’s Languedoc-Roussillon, and travelled extensively through major wine regions in Europe and Australia.

Joining Giesen in 2020, Reinier now leads the production of the NoLo portfolio, oversees third-party gin processing, and manages a range of technical projects. His role spans premium single-vineyard wines through to innovative alcohol-free styles, always with a focus on efficiency, quality, and innovation.

Outside of work, Reinier is a husband and father of two teenage boys, an endurance mountain biker, and a keen free diver. He’s also known for hosting traditional South African braais—best enjoyed with good company and a Springbok game on in the background.
