Inspired by family history, Giesen’s Mosel Riesling honours the legacy of August Giesen, who travelled to Mosel in the early 1900s to purchase barrels of Riesling. Today, the Giesen brothers collaborate with Mosel winemaker Tobias Treis, whose family has been making wine in the region since 1684.
The vineyard sits within the village of Reil on the banks of the Mosel River. Steep, terraced slopes rise 150 metres from river to summit. Vines, many more than 50 years old, are rooted in ancient, mineral-rich slate soils that define the region’s distinctive character.
The 2020 vintage in Mosel began warm and sunny, with settled flowering conditions. Despite summer drought across much of Germany, warm days and cool nights leading into harvest allowed grapes to develop flavour while retaining acidity. The result is a fresh, fruity vintage typical of Mosel Riesling.
Aromas of lime, tangerine and orange blossom are layered with rose petal and hints of marmalade. The palate shows citrus, Fuji apple and subtle spice, balanced by mouth-watering acidity and a persistent finish.
