Giesen Uncharted

Uncharted Chardonnay

White peach and lemon with toasted hazelnut and flint. Rich and concentrated, balanced by bright natural acidity.

Giesen Uncharted Chardonnay 2023 is a blend of vineyard sites located in the Southern Valleys and Wairau Valley sub-regions of Marlborough. Vineyards with heavier soils were selected to provide subtle flint character and enhanced texture.

Favourable weather conditions during the growing season supported consistent water supply and optimal ripeness. Cooler evenings enabled slow flavour development while maintaining natural acidity.

The nose shows white peach, lemon, toasted hazelnut and flint. The palate is rich and concentrated, with ripe lemon and peach supported by bright citrus zest. Grapefruit notes carry through the finish, providing freshness and length.

Fruit was harvested and pressed immediately on arrival at the winery to capture freshness and varietal definition. The juice was settled overnight to allow solids to drop out, then racked to tank and inoculated with selected yeast to begin fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine was matured on French oak for nine months. A range of coopers and toast levels was used to build subtle complexity and texture without overpowering the fruit. This careful selection was designed to support the wine’s cool-climate characters, adding gentle structure and integration while keeping white peach, lemon and flinty notes at the forefront. The wine was then fined and filtered prior to bottling to ensure clarity, stability and a polished finish.

Reviews

Cameron DouglasMaster Sommelier

"Classic, enticing and familiar bouquet of Chardonnay with aromas of sweet peaches and just whipped cream, vanilla and baking spice moments with a mild toasty oak appeal. On the palate - dry, nicely weighted with a creamy and spice mouthfeel, a core of fruit and contrasting acidity and warming alcohol. The finish is lengthy with fruit, spice and wood flavours that mirror the nose."

"Instantly appealing, this hand picked wine was grown in the Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys and fermented in French and German oak barrels of varying sizes. An elegant, lively wine with a creamy bouquet, it is mouthfilling, with strong citrusy, gently biscuity flavours that are fresh, crisp and sustained."

"From hand-picked grapes grown in the Wairau and Southern Valleys. Smooth-textured, mouth-filling Chardonnay with grapefruit, green apple, oyster-shell, bread crust and brioche flavours. A fruit-focused and appealing wine."
