Clayvin

Clayvin Pinot Noir

Discover our finest wines from the iconic, certified organic Clayvin Vineyard, one of Marlborough’s most celebrated sites, renowned worldwide for its pure expression of terroir. Red cherry, plum and floral lift with fine tannins and structural depth. A precise, organically farmed single-vineyard Pinot Noir.

Clayvin Vineyard, planted in 1993, sits on a north-facing hillside in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys. Organically farmed and high-density planted, the site promotes low vine vigour and concentrated fruit. Its complex clay soils provide water retention while allowing deep root penetration into cooler subsoils, contributing to structure and minerality. The 2023/24 season was marked by warm, dry conditions, with a very wet winter beforehand helping replenish soil moisture reserves. These conditions supported concentrated fruit and vibrant aromatics.

This Pinot Noir shows red cherry and freshly picked plum with lifted floral notes. The palate is structured and refined, with fine tannins and a long, balanced finish.

Fruit was hand-picked from Clayvin’s C and G blocks and hand-sorted in the vineyard before transport to the winery. A portion of the fruit was fermented using a semi-carbonic technique to accentuate red fruit and floral notes, adding complexity to the final blend.

Reviews

Bob CampbellMaster of Wine

"Elegant, supple Pinot Noir with cherry, berry, violet, dried herb and spicy oak flavours. It has a seductively smooth texture and an impressively lengthy finish that reveals a wine of subtle power."

Gourmet Traveller WineTop NZ Pinot Noirs

“A youthful nose displaying red cherry, blue stone fruits, rhubarb, pomegranate and a splash of Campari for a perfectly bitter edge. Savoury palate heightened by herbal and rosehip notes. Continues with the excellent red fruit core finishing with fine chalky tannins.” I found the fruit distinctly ripe, nicely matching the opulent, fleshy palate. It’s barely showing development, suggesting it will gain complexity over several years."

Decanter World Wine Awards

"Plum aromatics with hints of tea leaf and smoke. Attractively refined palate, red fruit and oak."
