Vietnamese fresh spring rolls
Gemstone - Our Crown Jewel. A unique single vineyard Riesling with a quarter of the blend fermented & matured in granite tanks.
Enticing and textural with notes of luscious citrus blossom and white florals. A beautiful flow and balance with subtle sweetness and hints of smokiness.
Each vintage the fruit comes exclusively from a single vineyard within the Marlborough wine region. The 2017 vintage was from the Giesen-owned Eden Valley Vineyard in the lower Waihopai Valley; our 2018 and 2020 vintages were from a single vineyard in the Awatere Valley.
A portion of the blend is fermented and matured in granite tanks. It’s the use of granite which makes Gemstone special.
Granite tanks are made from one giant slab of plutonic rock and the French have been fermenting in them for centuries. Granite acts a little like oak barrels, it lets air in and they ever so slightly ‘sweat’, this slight evaporation adds concentration to the wine. This ensures the wine portion matured in granite is clean, bright and full of flavour.
A unique Gemstone of a wine.
These wines feature something a little bit out of the ordinary - a little bit extra-special. We invite you to explore these delightful wines, discover what makes them unique, and maybe even find a new favourite.
Awatere Valley, Marlborough
Fruit is hand harvested before being pressed as whole bunches.
The free run juice was fermented in a combination of granite tanks, used French oak barrels and stainless.
After fermentation the wine is matured on light lees for five months.
The use of granite adds another dimension to the wine, creating an intense, pure Riesling.

"If you like a smack of sweetness in your riesling then you’ve come to the right place, because this mandarin, apple and lime-laden lovely is saturated with zesty citrus sweetness, gum-tingling acidity and hefty, honeyed notes on
the finish. Unique in that it’s fermented in a granite tank which kind of lets the wine ‘sweat’ and increases concentration. Granite tanks are made from one giant slab of plutonic rock and the French have been fermenting in them for centuries. Sept 2018."

"2018 Vintage: Excellent - Explosive nose of citrus blossom, fruit jube, sherbet and apple. The rich and bold palate continues the theme, adding honeyed elements, yet for all its fatness, it does retain a light, aerial quality. Distinctly youthful and primary, developing more creaminess in the glass with aeration: time should be a friend here. August 2018."
Mark Henderson - Otago Daily Times
"2018 Vintage: Top Drops - This wine is enticing and textural with notes of luscious citrus blossom band white florals. A beautiful flow and balance with subtle sweetness, minerality and a lingering character-filled finish. August 2018."

"2017 Vintage: It is delightfully charming on the nose showing lime sorbet, red apple and white floral characters with a hint of savoury complexity. The palate is concentrated and linear, displaying delicate fruit intensity and fine texture, fabulously enhanced by elegant sweetness and perfectly pitched acidity, leading to a superbly long juicy finish. At its best: 2018 to 2027."
Sam Kim - Wine Orbit
"2017 Vintage: Very fragrant and quite complex with aromas of flowers, apples, citrus fruits and spice. On the palate – off-dry, but with a focused acidity the wine finishes almost dry. Flavours of lemon and ginger tea, apple and honeysuckle. A lovely example with concentration and length. Drink now and through 2028."
Cameron Douglas - The Shout
