This exquisite Pinot Noir reveals a harmonious blend of dark and red fruits, complemented by bramble, earthy undertones, and hints of leather. Subtle oak integration enhances the structure, while its balanced elegance and smooth palate deliver a truly refined expression of the vintage.

With over four decades of winemaking experience, the three Giesen brothers are intimately acquainted with Marlborough’s best vineyards and terroir. World renowned vineyard ‘Clayvin’ has historically set the standard for premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production from Marlborough. These wines deliver exceptional, pure expressions of the Clayvin Vineyard which we’re proud to share with you.

Certified organic, this north-facing hillside vineyard is nurtured with meticulous hands-on viticulture following biodynamic principles. The clay soils, varied root stocks and high density planted 30+ year old vines reduce vigour and promote root structure, delivering highly concentrated fruit with great structure, tannin and minerality.

Winemaking

Hand-picked from Clayvin’s C and G blocks; all fruit was hand-sorted in the vineyard before being transported to the winery. A portion of fruit was fermented using the semi-carbonic technique, to accentuate the red fruit and floral notes adding complexity to the final blend.

Reviews

"Elegant, supple Pinot Noir with cherry, berry, violet, dried herb and spicy oak flavours. It has a seductively smooth texture and an impressively lengthy finish that reveals a wine of subtle power. Accessible now with cellaring potential 2021-2025.
2016 Vintage, Reviewed January 2021."

Bob Campbell, Master of Wine

"2016 Giesen Single Vineyard Clayvin Pinot Noir (A$50/NZ$60) found strong support from Murphy, who wrote: “A youthful nose displaying red cherry, blue stone fruits, rhubarb, pomegranate and a splash of Campari for a perfectly bitter edge. Savoury palate heightened by herbal and rosehip notes. Continues with the excellent red fruit core finishing with fine chalky tannins.” I found the fruit distinctly ripe, nicely matching the opulent, fleshy palate. It’s barely showing development, suggesting it will gain complexity over several years.
2016 Vintage, Reviewed May 2021."

"Plum aromatics with hints of tea leaf and smoke. Attractively refined palate, red fruit and oak.
2017 Vintage; Reviewed July 2021."

Decanter World Wine Awards

"This is plush and oaky, with cedar, vanilla and baking spices layered atop cherry-berry fruit. The midpalate is rich and round, while the finish is a bit astringent. Try in 2019.
2013 Vintage, Reviewed March 2018."

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Enthusiast Magazine

"2013 Vintage: From this famed vineyard at high density planting (about 8,000 vines/ha), the vines were crop-thinned to minuscule 1 kg/vine. Glorious aromas of dark fruit, game, black olive and truffle lead to a powerful yet graceful palate that is seamless and expansive. The wine exhibits awesome presence on the palate with rich mouthfeel and loads of fine, grainy tannins. Bold and stylish, and finishes extremely long. At its best: now to 2025."

96

Sam Kim - Wine Orbit

"2013 Vintage: Deep ruby, the beautiful 2013 vintage is sweet-fruited and concentrated, with impressive structure and harmony. Powerful, dense and silky, it has lovely flow across the palate, with a lingering finish"

Michael Cooper Buyer’s Guide

"2013 Vintage: This beautiful wine went straight to a five-star rating on all of the judges’ score-sheets. Deep ruby, it is sweet-fruited and concentrated, with impressive structure and harmony. Powerful, dense, silky and lingering, with lovely flow across the palate, it was praised by one panellist as ‘great!’"

Winestate

"2012 Vintage: Giesen now leases the hillside Clayvin vineyard that was once exclusively used by Fromm vineyards. This is a refined, elegant and quite linear pinot noir with dense, ripe plum, cherry and mineral flavours. It showcases a seasoning of spice including anise, plus a delicious undercurrent of toasty and savoury characters that could possibly be oak derived. This pinot noir is firmly structured and, although it can be appreciated now, I have no doubt that it will deliver so much more in just a few years time."

97

Bob Campbell - Gourmet Traveller Wine

"2015 Vintage: Exquisitely composed and perfectly proportioned, this stunning pinot exhibits dark fruit, game, violet, cedar and mixed spice aromas with nuances of cocoa and dark mushrooms. The palate delivers magnificent fruit weight and intensity, while remaining refined and restrained. A wine of great presence and style. At its best: 2019 to 2027."
